
Former world number one Novak Djokovic is through to the quarterfinal at the ongoing French Open tournament after he defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain in a one-sided last 16 duel on Sunday.
The 20th seeded Serbian saw off his 30th seeded opponent 6-3 6-4 6-2 to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for an Open era record 12th time.
Djokovic, 31, will now face surprise package and world number 72 Marco Cecchinato for a place in the semifinal after the Italian stunned Belgian eighth seed David Goffin in their last 16 clash.
Cecchinato defeated Goffin 7-5 4-6 6-0 6-3 in one of the standout results of the tournament.
12-time Grand Slam champion has reached the French Open quarterfinals for a ninth successive and the world number 22 is very excited with his latest feat.
After his straight sets win over Verdasco. Djokovic said: “Considering all the circumstances in the last 15 months it is quite an achievement to get to the quarters of a Slam.”
“I always play well at a Slam and always build my form to peak at a Slam.
“Hopefully it will get even better. I don’t want to stop here.” he concluded.
