Emma Raducanu Beats Leylah Fernandez To Win Historic US Open Title

Teenager Emma Raducanu became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam in 44 years as she beat Canada’s 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez to win the US Open.

The 18-year-old ended her fairy tale run in New York with a 6-4 6-3 win over Fernandez in a thrilling final.

Raducanu served an ace on her third championship point to seal an incredible win after which she collapsed to the floor in disbelief.

She went through qualifying and the tournament without dropping a set becoming the first woman to win at Flushing Meadows without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014

She’s also the first British female winner at Flushing Meadows since Virginia Wade in 1968, and the first qualifier in the Open era to win a Slam.

The youngest women’s Slam champion since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004, Raducanu will rise to number 23 in the world and she becomes British number one.

She also takes home $2.5m in prize money.
