French Ligue 1 Review: The Olympiques Experience Contrasting Fortunes In Top Three Bid

The Olympiques (Lyon and Marseille) experienced contrasting fortunes as the top three race to determine UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualifiers for next season hots up.

Olympique Lyon stars Maxwel Cornet and Mariano Diaz scored to hand the former champions a 2-1 at Caen and propel them to second place ahead of AS Monaco and Olympique Marseille on goal difference with the home side’s lone goal coming late in the game through Ivan Santini.

Marseille started the weekend in second place but failed to capitalise on leaders PSG’s rare defeat and have now dropped to fourth spot with the disappointing 1-1 draw against Montpellier away from home.

Giovanni Sio edged the hosts ahead before in-form Marseille forward Florian Thauvin scored from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime to level matters for his side. Neither side could add to their goal tally as they both settled for a share of the spoils.
