UCL: UEFA To Redo Last 16 Draw After ‘Material Error’ Derailed Initial Draw

The Champions League last 16 draw has been declared void and will be “entirely redone” at 14:00 GMT (3pm Nigerian time), UEFA has announced.

The initial draw had seen Manchester United erroneously drawn to play Villarreal who they weren’t eligible to face having played them in the group stage. The English side were then being inexplicably excluded from being drawn to face Atletico Madrid before being paired against Paris Saint Germain.

Following the draws, a number of teams including Atletico Madrid and Villarreal lodged protests with UEFA over how the draws were conducted and Europe’s governing body has now decided to redo the draw in its entirety.

“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the Uefa Champions League Round of 16,” UEFA said in a statement.

“As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET (14:00 GMT).”
