Bundesliga Review: Leverkusen Secure Second Spot With Mainz Victory As Wolfsburg Move Away From Relegation Zone After Win

Bayer Leverkusen have moved into second spot behind league leaders Bayern Munich after two second half goals sealed a 2-0 win over Mainz 05 in a week 20 Bundesliga clash on Sunday evening.

Leon Bailey gave the hosts the lead just after the interval before a Wendell penalty wrapped up the maximum points for the 2002 UEFA Champions League (UCL) losing finalists.

The win was enough to move Leverkusen (34 points) four places up the table from 6th to 2nd while their opponents Mainz 05 (20 points) drop one place from 14th to 15th.

Mainz are currently three points above Werder Bremen in the relegation/promotion playoff spot.

Former champions VFL Wolfsburg have moved six points clear of Werder Bremen in 16th place after a 1-0 away win at Hannover 96 courtesy striker Younes Malli’s goal.

Wolfsburg move their point tally to 23 but stay in 13th spot while their hosts are stuck on 27 points in 10th place.
