ATHLETICS: Nigeria Conclude Africa U18 & U20 Championships With 26 Medals

Team Nigeria finished the African U20 and U18 Championships at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast with a total of twenty-seven medals after the country’s athletes won seven more medals on Saturday, the final day of the competition.

Nigeria’s first medal on the final day came in the Girls’ 400m Hurdles where Sarah Ochigbo took gold in a time of 1:03.13s. Senegal’s Saphietou Boye (1:05.97) and Djamilatou Sanou of Burkina Faso (1:06.24) finished in second and third place respectively.

There was also silver for Ndiponke Okure in the Boys’ category of the same event. South Africa’s Luciano Custodio finished in first place to win gold while Egypt’s Youssef Badwy got the Bronze.

In the Boys’ Octathlon, Yusuf Rasheed won silver after impressing throughout to keep himself in contention going into the last day. 

There was also silver for Ese Awusa who finished in second place in the Girls’ Heptathlon while Blessing Ovwighonadjebere also did similar with a silver medal in the women’s category of the same event.

Team Nigeria also picked up medals in the men and women 4x400m relays team with both sets of athletes winning bronze in their respective categories.

Blessing Oladoye, Blessing Ovwighonadjebere, Glory Patrick and Juliana Abayomi combined to place third in the women’s category while the quartet of Nnabukwo Gbaruko, Shedrach Akpeki, Nsikak Okon and Jeremiah Nathaniel also finish in third place in the men’s event in a time of 3:20.15s.

Nigeria finished the competition with 10 gold, 5 Silver and 11 bronze medals.
