Share This:

Nigeria have been relegated to the Africa Zone Group IV in the Davis Cup after the trio of Emmanuel Audu, Emmanuel Idoko and Emmanuel Paul lost all their matches at the Africa Zone Group III hosted on the clay courts of Nairobi from 11 to 14 September 2019.

Nigeria’s Davis Cup team captained by John Atiomo was drawn in Pool A alongside Tunisia, Namibia and Mozambique while Pool B had Madagascar, Algeria, Benin and host nation, Kenya.

Table-toppers in Pools A and B play the runner-ups in the opposing group for a chance to qualify to the Africa/Europe Zone Group II while the teams finishing third in both groups play the bottom teams in the opposing groups in a relegation playoff.

Having lost all their games in the round-robin group stage to finish bottom, Nigeria took on the third-placed team in Pool B, Algeria, in a bid to retain their position in the Davis Cup Africa Zone Group III but ultimately fell short in a 2-0 to the North Africans which sealed their relegation to the tier below for next year’s competition.

Namibia, who were also in Pool A with Nigeria suffered a similar fate after losing 3-0 to Benin Republic in their relegation playoffs.

Tunisia and Kenya who both topped Pools A and B respectively sealed ascent to the Africa/Europe Zone Group II where they’ll compete in 2020 after they emerged victorious in their respective promotion playoffs.

Tunisia beat Madagascar 2-0 while Kenya dispatched Mozambique by a similar scoreline.
