Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku is untouchable in his team.

Lukaku has come under criticism from a section of the club’s supporters after going five games without a goal.

In his defence,  Mourinho says Lukaku should be “untouchable” from fans’ criticism having made a fast start to life since his £75m summer arrival from Everton.

The 24-year old scored 11 goals in his first 10 games for his new club.

Speaking ahead of United’s home game with Benfica in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Mourinho said:

“What he does for the team is fantastic and to play football for a striker is not just about scoring goals,” said the Manchester United boss.

“I think Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of respect from everyone.” he added.

Speaking further, Lukaku’s manager said:

“For me, he is untouchable in my team and I think he should be untouchable in the support and the respect he deserves from the fans.”

Despite his struggles in front of goal, Lukaku has provided an assist in each of his last two league games and is almost certain to play a part against visitors Benfica with United knowing that victory could guarantee a last 16 place.
