Taiwo Awoniyi Becomes First Nigerian To Score In Major League As Covid-19 Suspension Lifts

Taiwo Awoniyi became the first Nigerian to score in a major football league on Sunday as Mainz 05 held Cologne to a 2-2 draw.

Awoniyi came off as a super sub to engineer Mainz 05’s recovery to Cologne as the German Bundesliga resumed after the coronavirus suspension.

Cologne were ahead by two goals before Awoniyi halved the deficit few minutes after coming off the bench.

The Liverpool loanee was scoring his first goal of the Bundesliga season since joining from Liverpool.

It was the lift Mainz needed as they then drew level at 2-2 in the 72nd minute.

Mainz are just four points clear of the drop zone in 15th place with 27 points from 26 matches.
