Onuachu Sends Rohr Reminder With Brace In Genk Win Over Mechelen

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu delivered a timely reminder of his quality in front of goal with a brace as Genk beat KV Mechelen in the Belgian Jupiler League on Sunday.

With Eagles manager Gernot Rohr set to name his squad for next month’s double friendly against Tunisia and Ivory Coast in Austria on Monday, Onuachu gave the 65-year-old something to think about with his third goal in two games.

It is not clear if his performance on Sunday came in time to make any difference in Rohr’s thinking, however, as the list for both games has already been drawn up and he’ll have to wait and see.

The giant 25-year-old was on target in the loss to Beerschot last week and was at it again as Genk ran out 3-1 winners against KV Mechelen at the Luminus Arena.

Onuachu scored his first in the 10th minute to draw Genk level after Karim Mrabti’s 6th minute opener for the visitors.

The striker completed his brace in the 69th minute to make it 3-1 after Junya Ito put Genk in front.

Compatriot Cyriel Dessers who is expected to finally get called up to the Super Eagles when the squad is revealed on Monday was an unused sub.

Onuachu who was part of Nigeria’s bronze medal winning squad at the 2019 Nations Cup in Egypt has not played for the Super Eagles since coming off the bench in a friendly against Brazil last October although he was an unused substitute in the Eagle’s 2021 AFCON qualifying victory against Benin in November.

Belgian-born Dessers has yet to make his debut for Nigeria since declaring for the 3-time African champions. He was in line to make his debut against Sierra Leone in a 2021 AFCON qualifier in March before the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of the fixture.
