A controversial penalty from Argentine winger Pablo De Blassis dominated Mainz’s 2-0 home win over Freiburg in what was a German Bundesliga clash played on Monday evening.

A handball incident waved away just before halftime was reviewed with the use of VAR and converted by De Blassis at the start of the second half to edge Mainz ahead before the same player completed his brace in the 79th minute to wrap up the points for his side.

The win takes Mainz (30 points) one place up the table from 16th to 15th place as they leapfrog Freiburg (30 points) who drop down one spot from 15th to the relegation playoff (16th) spot.‍
