NPFL Round-Up: Enyimba, Rangers Win, Akwa United Falter

Enyimba and Enugu Rangers both won their rescheduled Matchday 1 games on Thursday to record their first wins in the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League season while Akwa United could only manage a drab goalless draw at home in Uyo.

Champions Enyimba playing at home in Aba thrashed Nasarawa United 3-1 with Austine Oladapo scoring a brace and Samson Obi getting the other goal while Hamzat Owolabi scored the visitor’s solitary effort.

Elsewhere, Nnamdi Egbujuo’s 55th-minute strike was enough to hand Rangers all three points against a stubborn Sunshine Stars at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

Rangers and fellow CAF Confederation Cup campaigners Enyimba had drawn their opening games on Matchday 2.

In Uyo, last season’s joint-top scorer Mfon Udoh presented his Golden Boot Award to the home crowd at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium before kick-off but failed to help Akwa United fire past Abia Warriors as the game ended in a drab goalless draw.

Udoh who holds the record for the most goals scored in a season hit ten goals alongside Nasarawa United’s Sunusi Ibrahim to emerge top scorer.

But having opened his account in the 1-1 draw at Warri Wolves on Matchday 2, the former Enyimba striker fired blanks as the Promise Keepers once again failed to get the better of Warriors who are rapidly becoming a bogey team for the Uyo side.

Akwa United next face Enyimba FC at Aba while Sunshine Stars travel to Umuahia to play Abia Warriors on Matchday 3.
