NPFL: Rivers United Confident Of Claiming Title – Nelson Esor (AUDIO)

Rivers United midfielder Nelson Esor says the club’s utmost target is to lift the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title this season, adding he is confident the Port Harcourt side can achieve the feat.

With 10 matches left in the 2020/2021 campaign, the Pride of Rivers currently occupy the fourth spot on the NPFL table, with 48 points from 28 matches, five points behind table-toppers Akwa United.

Stanley Eguma’s side will be guests of second-placed Nasarawa United in Lafia on Sunday as they continue their chase of a first title since their name was changed from Dolphins to Rivers United in 2016.

Asked if Rivers United have what it takes to return to the continent, where they featured in the CAF Confederation Cup this season, the former Go Round captain said he is under no illusion that they will not only qualify for the CAF inter-club competition, but also win the league this term.

“Definitely, definitely, we have all it takes (to qualify for the continent),” the attacking midfielder told www.busybuddiesng.com.

“We have the confidence that we can still win the league. It is very possible. It’s a marathon league like our coach will always tell us. Anything can happen any time. If you win your two matches and come home and win, you’ll definitely be at the top. That’s how the league has been this season.

“So, we are hoping that when we go to Nasarawa and get our maximum points, come back home, get our maximum points…..Don’t forget the fact that we still have back-to-back home matches to play. Definitely, we’ll get the two wins from there and we’ll take it up from there.

“It’s very possible that we can still get to the top. We are not even targeting the continental because that one is sure. We are targeting how to lift a trophy, either the Aiteo Cup or the Premier League (NPFL). These are the targets for the season, and we believe we can do it.”
