NPFL Matchday 7 Review: Top Two Return To Winning Ways In Grand Style

The top two teams in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) return to winning ways in big style on Matchday 7 after the respective setbacks they suffered in the previous matchday.

League leaders Akwa United returned to winning ways with a big win over Wikki Tourists after a 1-1 draw at FC IfeanyiUbah on Matchday 6.

The Promise Keepers thrashed visiting Wikki Tourists 4-0 courtesy goals from Ubong Friday, Victor Mbaoma, Michael Ibe and Christian Pyagbara to maintain their one-point lead over their nearest challengers and defending champions Plateau United.

The Jos-based side also returned to winning ways with a convincing 5-0 victory over Sunshine Stars at home as they recovered from a disappointing 2-0 loss to Kano Pillars in the last set of league fixtures.

Tosin Omoyele scored a brace for Plateau United in addition to further goals from Sunday Ingbede, Emeka Umeh and substitute Mateng Pam.

Third-placed Kano Pillars kept up the pressure on the top two with a 2-0 win over MFM FC of Lagos through goals from leading goalscorer Junior Lokosa (7 goals) and substitute Adamu Hassan.

Newly promoted outfit Heartland FC of Owerri were the only winless team in the league but all of that changed with a 2-0 victory over 10-man fellow newly promoted side Kwara United at home.

In the Rivers Derby, Oche Salefu scored from the spot to give Rivers United a 1-0 win over Go Round FC at home while Abia Warriors and the immediate past champions Enugu Rangers played out a goalless draw in the Oriental Derby.
