IAAF Doha 2019: Team Nigeria’s Day 2 Marked by Disqualification as Ekevwo Fails to Reach Finals

Nigeria’s quest to win a medal after 6 years continues after the duo of Blessing Okagbare and Divine Oduduru were disqualified as Raymond Ekevwo got dusted by more experienced legs on day 2 at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.

After finishing day 1 in second place,
Ekevwo was two races away from breaking Nigeria’s six year medal jin but the wait will continue as Raymond finished fifth in the men’s 100m semifinals behind world champion Justin Gatlin, 2011 World Champion Yohan Blake, Rio 2016 Silver medalist Andre De Grasse and China’s Zhenye Xie.

The duo of Blessing Okagbare and Divine Oduduru were understandably disqualified from participating in the men’s and women’s 200m event respectively for flouting Section 2, Rule 142 of IAAF rules.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games double medallist and NCAA champion will no longer participate in any event in this year’s championship after the duo opted out of their 100m events on day one.

Elsewhere, Rilwan Alowonle was running a good race in the semifinals of the men’s 400m Hurdle till he hit a barrier and had to settle for 8th in 52.01s. Consequently, losing out of the finals.

National Record holder Edose Ibadin couldn’t scale past in his Heats after finishing 6th in 1:47.91s.
