ATHLETICS: Team Nigeria Embark On 20 Hour Road Trip To Ivory Coast For Junior Athletics Championships

Nigeria’s contingent to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships will depart by road for the 20 hour, 1000km journey to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, venue of the championships which will hold from April 16th to 20th.

The contingent made up of a record 96 athletes, coaches and officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) are expected to depart for Ivory Coast from their camp at the Gateway International Stadium in Ijebu Ode aboard four luxury buses.

The athletes were selected following the National U18 and U20 Trials which held in Ilaro, Ogun State last month.

Nigeria’s participation at the meet had been thrown in jeopardy after the AFN was informed on Thursday that funds would not be released for the competition by the Ministry of Sports.

The directive from the Ministry also informed the athletes that there would be no camping, traveling or competition allowance paid to them for representing Nigeria at the Championships.

Busybuddiesng.com learnt that the buses which will convey the athletes to and from Ivory Coast were provided by some board members of the AFN, the Delta State Sports Commission and “some ex-athletes”.

Accommodation and feeding for the traveling contingent is expected to be handled by the organisers.

Nigeria return to the competition after failing to send a team to the 2017 edition of the championships in Algeria due to the inability of the AFN and Sports Ministry to raise the required funds.
