England became the last team to book a spot in the quarterfinals at the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia after they won their first penalty shootout at the fourth time of asking via a 4-3 win over last 16 opponents Colombia.

Both sides played out a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time and extra time paving the way for penalties to decide who goes through.

After a goalless affair in the first half, the game sprung into life when tournament’s leading scorer Harry Kane won and converted a 57th minute penalty to give England the lead amidst the protest from former Aston Villa midfielder Carlos Sanchez who was adjudged to have brought down the Tottenham Hotspur striker in the box.

Harry Kane now has six goals at the tournament to go joint top alongside former player Gary Lineker (1986 World Cup edition in Mexico) for the number of goals scored by an Englishman in a single World Cup.

The Three Lions restricted the Colombians to lack of decent opportunities until when substitute Mateus Uribe brought out a magnificent save from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in added time before free scoring defender Yerry Mina equalised for the South Americans from the resulting corner kick.

Barcelona defender Yerry Mina is the first player to score three headed goals at the World Cup since former Germany striker Miroslav Klose at the 2002 edition.

Neither team added any goal in extra time thus leading to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Jordan Henderson missed for England while the duo of Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca failed to convert their spot kick to hand England a 4-3 win on penalties in their first ever penalty shootout success at a World Cup tournament having lost all the previous three shootouts.

England will face fellow European side Sweden in the last eight.
