Wozniacki Is The New No.1 After Beating Halep To Win Australian Open

Caroline Wozniacki is the new world number one after she saw off Simona Halep of Romania to win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

The second seed won 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 in extreme conditions to finally win a major title at the 43rd time of asking.

The Dane was making her 3rd appearance in a Grand Slam final in Melbourne after previously a losing finalist at the US Open on two occasions.

Speaking after her victory, Wozniacki, who is the first Dane to win a Grand Slam singles title said: “I dreamt of this moment for so many years, and to be here today is a dream come true.”

Wozniacki, 27, will now replace Halep as number one in the world rankings on Monday.

On her own part, Halep, who had previously been beaten in two French Open finals, said: “Of course I am sad but Caroline was better than me.”

“I fight and have many years to go, so hopefully will face another challenge like today.” she added.
