Top tier Italian Football Club AS Roma picked Nigeria Professional Football League side as its club of the day on Thursday.

Roma announced Sunshine Stars of Akure, an Ondo state based club founded in 1995 in the club’s tweet:

“AS Roma’s Twitter Team of the Day is SunshineFCAkure. Founded in 1995, the Owena Whales, as they are known, compete in Nigeria’s top flight.

A unifying force for the Ondo State’s people, the club stands for unity and youth empowerment through football. Up Sunshine! Up Stars!

This is not the first time the Serie A side is granting an NPFL Club this gesture. In 2018, on the eve of Christmas, Plateau United of Jos were beneficiaries of the same gesture.

Also, prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the I Giallorossi picked Nigeria’s Super Eagles as their World Cup team.
