Sanders Strike Condemns Falconets To Defeat In Group D Opener In France

Nigeria’s female U20 team, Falconets began their FIFA World Cup campaign in France on a losing note after they were beaten 1-0 by Germany at the Stade Marville, Saint-Malo courtesy Stefanie Saunders strike.

Saunders struck the only goal of the game on 69 minutes following a goalmouth scramble in the Nigerian box.

The Germans slightly edged a goalless first half and were much improved after the halftime interval but found Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in inspired form as she kept the three-time champions at bay.

She was, however, powerless to stop Sanders’ close range finish.

Christopher Danjuma and her wards could have easily drawn level two minutes after Germany’s goal only for the shot from Peace Efih to hit the post.

The Germans thereafter held on to take victory and move to top spot in Group D ahead of the other group game between China People’s Republic (China PR) and Haiti.

Nigeria will face Haiti in a crucial second group game, while Germany do battle with China PR.
