NPFL: Ohawume Rescues Rivers United Against Wikki Tourists

Malachi Ohawume scored a last-gasp equaliser to rescue a point for Rivers United against Wikki Tourists in a 1-1 draw in Port-Harcourt on Monday.

Ohawume scored in the seventh minute of added time with virtually the last kick of the game to spare Stanley Eguma’s side from a shock defeat at home.

Wikki Tourists had lost their last four games and were expected to lose a fifth against United but the visitors took a shock lead at the Adokiye Amiesimaka when former Rivers man Stephen Gopey stabbed home in the 4th-minute.

The visitors held firm in the face of an onslaught from United and just when it appeared an unlikely victory was secure, Ohawume rose to dash their hopes and spare Eguma’s blushes.

The draw kept Rivers United’s unbeaten five-game run intact but they have now dropped points in consecutive home games and failed to win any of their last three games.

Eguma’s side move up to 4th in the table with 41 points, four points off leaders Akwa United while Wikki Tourists still without a substantive manager after Usman Abd’Allah’s resignation are 15th.

The concluding fixture of matchday 24 also ended in shared spoils with Jigawa Golden Stars and Abia Warriors playing out a barren stalemate.

A third successive goalless draw for Abia Warriors leaves them 13th with Jigawa Golden Stars a place and a point behind.
