He also signed a two-year contract extension with the Blues until 2022 before he was farmed out on loan to Nantes.
The seven-cap United States (US) international joined Chelsea in January 2016 and went on to make two Premier League appearances in April 2016 before he was sent out on loan.
He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Dutch Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem, making 72 appearances in all competitions in addition to helping the club win the Dutch Cup title for the first time in 2017.
