La Liga Review: Madrid Edge Betis In Thriller As City Rivals Atletico Trim Barcelona’s Lead To Seven Points

Real Madrid and Real Betis produced one of the best games of the current Spanish La Liga season after both team played out a thrilling eight-goal encounter in their Matchday 24 clash at the Benito Villamarin on Sunday night.

wonderkid Marco Asensio was undoubtedly the star of the game as he scored twice in a phenomenal performance to lead his Real Madrid side to victory in the bid to retain a top four spot with their league title challenge all but gone.

The Spanish international gave Real Madrid a 3rd minute lead before the hosts overturned the early goal in a maniac four first half minutes courtesy strikes from Assier Mandi and a Nacho Fernandes own goal.

The visitors trailed at the start of the second half but were grateful to club captain Sergio Ramos who dragged them back into the game within five minutes.

The aforementioned Asensio added a third Madrid goal just before the hour mark before star forward Cristiano Ronaldo joined in on the act six minutes later to put daylight between the Los Merengues and their hosts.

Real Betis, however, didn’t give up easily and they were rewarded with Pedro Leon’s goal thus setting up a grandstand finish before the much maligned Karim Benzema broke their hearts with a clinching goal in added time to give Real Madrid a 5-3 win in Seville.

Real Madrid also become the first team to score 6,000 goals in La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane’s wards move to within 17 points of oof league leaders Barcelona in the race for the title but their city rivals Atletico Madrid are much closer to the Blaugrana.

Atletico moved within seven points of Barcelona on Sunday evening after they won 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao at home courtesy second half goals from Kevin Gameiro and Diego Costa.
