Kazier Chiefs Hand Super Eagles Goalie Akpeyi Two-Year Contract Extension

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has penned a two-year extension to remain at South African side Kaizer Chiefs until June 2022.

The PSL side announced the deal on its Twitter handle on Wednesday.

“We are pleased to announce that goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi who joined Chiefs in January 2019 has earned himself a two-year contract extension to June 2022. #Amakhosi4Life,” the club tweeted.

Akpeyi, 33, was originally a stop-gap for the Amakhosi when he joined from Chippa United on a one-year deal in January of 2019 following a longterm injury to first-choice goalkeeper Khune Itumeleng.

However, following a shaky start to life with the Glamour Boys where he came in for severe criticism from fans, the former Gabros International goalkeeper has established himself as first-choice and has been instrumental as Ernst Middendorp’s side built a 10-point lead in Absa Premiership after 19 games.

His deal had been due to run out at the end of the season.

Akpeyi who was in goal for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has featured 18 times in all competitions Kaizer Chiefs, keeping eight clean sheets and conceding 15 goals in the process.
