Samuel Chukwueze Dazzles In Villareal Copa Del Rey Win

Samuel Chukwueze put up a dazzling cameo to help La Liga side Villareal see off Segunda División team Rayo Vallecano 2-0 to progress to the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old started on the bench for Javi Calleja’s men but was introduced to the game in place of Javier Ontiveros in the 74th minute with the game goalless and Villareal in search of a breakthrough.

It didn’t take long for his presence to be felt as the Yellow Submarine broke the deadlock just nine minutes later through Fernando Nino’s beautiful curler from outside the box.

Villareal were two goals up just moments later as the Nigerian magician weaved through the Rayo defence to set up fellow substitute Santi Carzola whose fierce shot from the edge of the area beat the despairing dive of Miguel Moro.

Chukwueze’s performance confirms a gradual return to form for the player who has struggled at times this season to live up to the heights of his debut season in the Spanish topflight.

He previously endured a seven-game barren spell which he broke in the 3-0 win over Girona in the previous round of the competition.

The Super Eagles forward has scored four goals and created another four in all competitions for the Yellow Submarine and would hope to continue his return to form when Villareal host Osasuna in La Liga on 2 February.
