Etheridge Pen Save Earns Cardiff First PL Point Against 10-Man Newcastle

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge was the hero for the newly promoted Premier League (PL) side after he saved a last-minute penalty from Brazilian winger Kenedy to earn his side their first point of the season via a goalless draw at the Cardiff Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Etheridge had earlier kept the Welsh side in the game with couple of saves from Spanish forward Ayoze Perez in the first half.

Cardiff City were then handed a lifeline towards the midpoint of the second half when Newcastle United substitute Isaac Hayden was given a straight red card for a high and late tackle on winger Josh Murphy.

Hayden came on for the injured Javier Manquillo at right back and had been defensively shaky until he was given his marching orders.

10-men Newcastle United conveniently kept the home side at bay and could have won the maximum points in added time when Cardiff City defender Sean Morrison was adjudged to have handled in the box.

Chelsea loanee Kenedy stepped up but his weak penalty was saved by the impressive Etheridge.

With the draw in the week two clash, Cardiff City and Newcastle United have earned their first point of the new season.
