Elena Rybakina Knocks Serena Williams Out Of French Open

Serena Williams’ wait for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title will continue after she was dumped out if the French Open by the impressive Elena Rybakina.

21st seed Rybakina triumphed 6-3 7-5 in an absorbing match, and 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams will have to try again at Wimbledon to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams.

Williams, 39, was outplayed in the first set and outfought in the second as Kazakh Rybakina made the quarter finals of a Slam for the first time.

The American has not won a Grand Slam title since the Australian Open in 2017 and while her victory over compatriot Danielle Collins on Friday suggested she could stand a good chance of winning in Paris, she never got to grips with Rybakina who’s ferocious groundstrokes proved too much for Williams.

Rybakina who’s yet to drop a set in the tournament will play Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter finals.
