My Coach Didn’t Want Me To Play For Nigeria – New Super Eagles Star

New Super Eagles sensation Brian Idowu has narrated how his club coach tried to discourage him from playing for the team.

Idowu, 25, revealed that Amkar Perm coach Gadzi Gadzhiyen wanted him to play for his place of birth (Russia) adding that the Russian tactician told him to wait and see whether he would be invited to the Russian national team.

He made this known in a chat with ESPN, Brian Idowu said: “Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr contacted me and told me that he was following me.”

“He wanted to invite me to the squad, but that was impossible because I didn’t have a Nigerian passport.

“Gadzhiev said that such a call is not incidental, and I should keep progressing. He advised me to wait and see if I get called by Russia as well. I don’t see why I can’t play for Russia if I keep getting better, but they have good players like Mario Fernandes in my position. They don’t miss me.” he concluded.

Brian Idowu made an instant impact in an international friendly for the Super Eagles on Tuesday night as he scored minutes after coming on as an halftime substitute for Ola Aina to edge Nigeria 3-2 ahead before the outstanding Alex Iwobi finished the team’s opponents and long time nemesis Argentina off to give the team a 4-2 win.
