Bundesliga Review: Cologne Preserve Top Flight Status With Fightback Against Schalke 04

FC Cologne have maintained their top flight status for one after they produced an impressive comeback to earn a 2-2 draw at home to UEFA Champions League (UCL) chasers Schalke 04 in what was a German Bundesliga Matchday 31 clash played on Sunday evening.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside 23 minutes courtesy Breel Embolo and Yevgeny Konoplyanka only for Leonardo Bittencourt to reduce the deficit three minutes later.

Marcel Risse then equalised for Cologne with seven minutes left to earn his side a 2-2 draw against their more fancied opponents.

FC Cologne stay (22 points) rooted to the bottom of the table despite the draw and are now eight points adrift of safety with three league games left to go while Schalke 04 (56 points) maintain their UCL push despite being pegged back.

In the other game played on Sunday, Augsburg secured a 2-0 home win over Mainz 05 who stay in 15th spot with 30 points and are five points above the relegation zone.

Mainz 05 are however just away from the relegation playoff spot on goal difference.

For Augsburg, they are comfortably placed in 11th place on the log with 40 points from 31 games.
