D'Tigress Celebrate 2019 Afrobasket Win

Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, jumped three places to 14th in the new rankings released by world basketball governing body FIBA on Thursday.

The 2019 Afrobasket champions pooled 366.6 points to maintain their spot as Africa’s top-ranked side.

Their three-spot climb made them the second-highest movers behind fellow Africans Mozambique who climbed seven places to 36th in the world and third in Africa.

D’Tigress progress up the global standings comes on the back of a successful Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifying campaign which saw them join their male counterparts in Japan after defeating Mozambique and suffering narrow losses to Serbia and USA in Belgrade.

The USA, Australia, Spain, Canada, France and Turkey remain unchanged as the top six teams in the latest rankings. Belgium, Serbia, China and Japan complete the rest of the top 10.

Senegal, 28th in the world remain Africa’s second-ranked country, while Angola and Mali ranked 41st and 45th respectively, make up the rest of the continent’s top five.
