Aspas Strikes Late To Derail Barca’s Title Hopes

Barcelona faltered once again in the race for the LaLiga crown as Iago Aspas’ late equaliser for Celta Vigo ensured a share of the spoils for both teams at the Abanca Balaidos.

The point takes Barca top but Real Madrid can establish a two-point lead if they beat Espanyol on Sunday.

Luis Suarez put Barca in front from Lionel Messi’s free-kick but Fedor Smolov levelled from Okay Yokuslu’s pass.

Suarez, who had never scored at Celta before today, then smashed in a great strike – from another Messi pass – but his ex-Liverpool team-mate Aspas bamboozled Marc-Andre ter Stergen with a perfect low free-kick to earn a point for the impressive Celta.

The hosts had a great chance to grab all three points deep into injury time but ex-Man City man Nolito shot straight at ter Stegen from close range.

Messi is still a goal short of his 700th career goal and is currently undergoing a mini-drought having not scored in three matches

But his assist for Suarez’s second was the 250th assist of his Barca career and he is the league’s top goalscorer with 21 and top assister with 17 in La Liga this season.
