ICC U19 Cricket World Cup: Nigeria Lose To England In Last Group Game

Looking to score a maiden victory at the ICC U19 Cricket Nations Cup, Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens took to the Diamond Oval on Saturday where they came up against Group B’s other winless side England in a poignant meeting fraught with history and symbolism.

England had introduced the game to Nigeria during the colonial period and a hundred years lined up against their former students but proved their superiority with an 8 wicket win.

Both teams had lost to Australia and West Indies in their first two games and sought to round off their group stage with a win.

Nigeria won the toss and elected to bat first and immediately started on the front foot with strings of partnership that took the game to a half-century for the loss of 5 wickets in 25 overs.

Wickets tumbled from there and Nigeria could only manage a total of 58 runs all out in 27 over-overs.

Hamidullah Qadri and George Hill took 4 wickets each conceding 24 and12 runs in 7 and 7.5 overs respectively.

Captain Sylvester Okpe scored Nigeria’s solitary double figures with 16 runs off 39 balls.

In the second innings, England were ruthless in their run chase surpassing the required total by scoring 64 runs for the loss of 2 wicket wickets in 11 overs.

Peter Aho and Abolarin Rasheed took 1 wicket each for Nigeria.

Young. S scored 39 runs not out off 33 balls to ensure England ended the group stage with a win.

Nigeria will proceed to Potchefstroom for the ranking games which will also include the teams from the various groups that finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
