Plateau Peacocks continued their push for a second straight league title with a 34-18 win over Desert Queens on Match Day 2 of the Prudent Energy Handball League second phase on Sunday at the Rowe Park Sports Center, Yaba, Lagos.
The defending champions are now within a point of leaders Safety Babes who defeated Seasider Babes 22-17.
Other matches in the female category saw Edo Dynamos edging a nervy encounter with Kada Queens 27-26 while Owena Queens, walked over on Match Day One, were soundly defeated 19-30 by Defender Babes.
In the last game in the women’s half, Imo Grasshoppers were ruthless in their win against South East neighbours Abia Valliants whom they crushed 36-10.
In the men’s category, Safety Shooters comfortably defeated Kada Stars 25-15 while Lagos Seasiders, buoyed by a strong home support, continued their winning run with a 37-29 win over De Defenders 37-29.
Kano Pillars defeated Bornu Spiders 26-18 to retain their spot on top the log while defending champions Niger United beat Bornu Spiders 34-29.
COAS Shooters of the Nigeria Army shot down Owena Kings 28-23 while Plateau Vipers struggled to defeat a resilient Prison Key Boys side 20-17.
Meanwhile, an exhibition game between women’s defending champions Plateau Peacocks and Ghana Police ended 23-18 in favour of the Nigerians.
Niger United’s Mohammed Anas’ six goals against Sokoto Rima saw him named the most valuable player in the men’s category while Hope Sunday Kinan of Plateau Peacocks won in the women’s category having scored eleven goals in her team’s defeat of Desert Queens.
