SW19 Day 7 Recap (Women’s Singles): Serena Williams Continues To Wax Strong

Former world number one Serena continued her bid for an eighth Wimbledon Open title as she defeated Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets to qualify for the quarterfinals.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion beat Rodina 6-2 6-2 in 62 minutes in the rare battle of mothers in the last 16 clash.

American tennis star Serena Williams, 36, will face Camila Giorgi in the last eight on Tuesday after the Italian saw off Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in straight sets (6-3 6-4) in the fourth round.

In the other last eight clashes, Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia will play Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova while Daria Kasatkina of Russia will face German Angelique Kerber.

In the remaining quarterfinal tie, Kiki Bertens of Belgium will battle another German Julia Georges for a spot in the semifinals.

World number 181 Serena Williams is guaranteed a return to the top 100 when the rankings are released on Monday after her fourth round victory over Evgeniya Rodina.

The 25th seed could make the top 20 if she wins the title at SW19.
