Australian Open Recap(Women): Wozniacki Produces Comeback To Secure Last 32 Spot; French Open Champion Ostapenko Also Through

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki produced an admirable comeback as she saved two match points and won six successive games to beat world number 119 Jana Fett in their Australian Open second round clash.

The 27-year old Danish tennis star defeated her opponent 3-6 6-2 7-5 in two hours and 31 minutes to secure a third round spot.

After the game, Wozniacki couldn’t explain how he managed to produced the fightback.

She said: “That was crazy, I don’t know how I got back into the match.”

“I’m very proud of the way I came back. It was definitely very difficult. Definitely wasn’t my best match, especially in the beginning.

“All of a sudden seeing myself down, almost out of the tournament, I started playing better and started really playing the tennis that I wanted to play.” she added.

Twelfth seed Julia Gorges’ 15-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end after she lost in straight sets to world number 42 Alize Cornet.

Frenchwoman Cornet won 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes to also secure her place on the last 32.

Cornet said afterwards that: “She had so many wins in a row and I’m just happy to break the spell.”

“I was not favourite today. I just played my heart out.” he added.

On if she could go further, Cornet said: “I dream step by step. For sure, many beautiful things are coming.”

2017 finalist Venus Williams’ conqueror in round one, Belinda Bencic, was knocked out by Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum in the second round.

The 24-year-old world number 125 saw off her Swiss opponent 6-1 6-3 to get to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko is also through to the last 32 after she defeated Ying-Ying Duan 6-3 3-6 6-4.

Elise Mertens of Belgium also join others in the last 32 after beating home favourite Daria Gavrilova 7-5 6-3.
