2019 AFCON: Gernot Rohr in Squad Selection Conundrum, to Drop Fan Favourites from Team

Head Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Gernot Rohr has admitted that he is having a selection issue with his attackers ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt later this month.

The Franco-German invited 25 players for pre-tournament camping in Asaba, Delta State, which 10 of these players are attackers who are currently in top form, save Kelechi Iheanacho who was only able to score a goal during Leicester City’s 2018/2019 league campaign.

Odion Ighalo who was the highest goal scorer in the AFCON qualifying stages, Ahmed Musa of Al Nassar FC, Arsenal’s Alexander Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu, Henry Onyekuru, Paul Onuachu, and Victor Osimhen make up the list of attackers Rohr invited to camp.

“It is always great to have these great players to work with, But the sleepless night for me would come between the night of 8th June and the morning of 9th June in Asaba after the friendly match against Zimbabwe when I have to drop two players from the 25-man provisional list.

“It’s always a hard thing to do but it has to be done because I would have to leave out at least one of the strikers.

“But we are going to put a lot of things into consideration especially their performance after one week of training and performance in the friendly match against Zimbabwe before taking a final decision.”

Three times champions, Super Eagles are grouped alongside Guinea and newcomers Burundi and Madagascar Group B of the newly expanded tournament and will begin their campaign against The Swallows on June 22.
