Team Nigeria Set for African Wrestling Championships Despite Odds

Nigeria’s wrestling contingent are on their way to Tunis for the 2019 African Wrestling Championship despite seeming financial obstacles earlier revealed by the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Ighali.

A 16-member team led by Commonwealth Games gold medalists – Odunayo Adekuoroye and Blessing Oborududu, yesterday, Tuesday, left Nigeria aboard a Turkish Airline.

Eight-time African champion Oborududu and 57kg fourth-ranked Adekuoroye will be in action according to a release made available by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation today.

The team which is made up of 16 wrestlers and five officials include; Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Aminat Adeniyi (62kg), Genesis Mercy (50kg), Nweke Rosemary (53kg), Kolawole Esther (55kg), Nwoye Ifeoma (59kg), Balogun Sunmisola (65kg), Hannah Reuben (72kg) and Onyebuchi Blessing (76kg) all in the women’s team.

Ighali pointed out that due to a paucity of funds, the team couldn’t embark on the journey with all members of the male team.
