Official: Oghenekaro Etebo Joins Galatasaray

Galatasaray have signed Super Eagles Midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo on a season-long loan deal from Stoke City, the Turkish club have announced.

The 24-year-old was unveiled by the Turkish giants on Wednesday after undergoing his medicals.

Turkish media reports suggest no loan fee was paid for the Nigerian with Galatasaray expected to cover his wages for the duration of the loan deal.

“Galatasaray Sportif A.Ş. informed the Public Disclosure Platform that an agreement was reached for the rental transfer of professional football player Oghenekaro Etebo until the end of the season,” the club revealed on its website.

“We welcome Oghenekaro Etebo to our club and wish him a successful season under the Galatasaray jersey.”

“I am excited to announce my arrival at Galatasaray, I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity and I am happy to be part of such a historic club,” Etebo wrote on Twitter.

The move marks a second loan spell away from Stoke City for Etebo having spent half of last season on loan at LaLiga side Getafe for whom he played 11 times as they finished just outside the European places in 8th.

The former Warri Wolves midfielder joined English Championship side Stoke City in June 2018 for €7.2m on the back of an excellent showing at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He was named Stoke’s best player in his debut season and has played a total of 45 league matches for the Championship side.

But he has been deemed surplus to requirements at Stoke after The Potters signed former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi this summer.

Etebo’s move to Galatasaray swells the ranks of Nigerians in Turkey as he joins compatriots Azubuike Okechukwu, Anthony Nwakaeme, Henry Onyekuru and Samuel Kalu in the Turkish topflight.
