Rivers Angels FC have emerged the 2018/2019 Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL) Champions bagging three million Naira in prize money and a one week tour in Spain courtesy of La Liga.

The Jewel of Rivers edged a hard-fought encounter against Confluence Queens of Lokoja with Cecilia Nku’s third-minute penalty enough for a 1-0 win in the final of the NWPL Super 4 at the Agege Stadium on Sunday.

Chinaza Enuma had handled inside the box and Nku dispatched the resultant penalty to reunite Rivers Angels with the league title for a seventh time after two years without a win.

Confluence Queens spurned a golden opportunity to draw level from the spot in the 23rd minute with Precious Christopher’s effort rebounding off the woodwork after the referee had awarded a penalty for Ezekiel Blessing’s handball inside the box.

The Kogi based side attacked in search of a leveller but Angels successfully repelled waves of attacks and held on for the victory.

Speaking after the game, Evelyn Nwabuoku who captained Angels on the day told the club’s media channel that another year without the league title would have been disastrous for the team especially after they had lost in the final of the Aiteo Cup earlier in the season.

“I am really excited with today’s victory because it’s been long we won a league title,” Nwabuoku said. “We already lost in the final of the Women’s Aiteo Cup and this was the only opportunity we had to redeem ourselves.

“It would have been very bad for a team like Rivers Angels to go an entire season without a title and I’m glad we came out victorious today,” she added.

Head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon was particularly pleased about the opportunity to travel to Spain the title win has afforded his side which he says would further aid their development.

“I am actually the happiest man here today,” Okon said after the game.

“The most interesting thing about today’s win is the fact that we’ll be travelling to Spain. A trip I will use to expose my girls to more techniques of the game.

“So I’m really excited that we won today even though we could have won with a better goal margin,” he added.
