INSIDE AFCON 2019: Super Eagles Engage in Intensive Training Ahead of Semifinal Clash

CAIRO – It was back to the training field for the Super Eagles a day after sealing progress to the semifinals of the 2019 AFCON at the expense of Bafana Bafana of South Africa as the team engaged in a light training and recovery session in Cairo today.

While the bulk of the team engaged in light aerobics under the watchful eyes of Gernot Rohr and his backroom staff at the Aero Sports Club, the trio of Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo and Chidozie Awaziem appeared to be still feeling the exertions from Wednesday’s match as they sat out the entirety of the sessions while being attended to by the physios who applied ice packs to various ailing body parts.

Fullback Shehu Abdullahi who played no part in yesterday’s game also sat out the entire session and also received attention from the physios who applied an ice back to the back of his left thigh although there is no suggestion that he is carrying an injury having been declared fully fit by coach Gernot Rohr a few days ago.

In addition to the aerobics session, all unused substitutes in the game against South Africa took part in a ball playing session under the hot Cairo sun while the other players watched on from the safety of the shades on the sidelines.

Nigeria’s victory over South Africa put them through to the semifinals on Sunday when they will continue their bid for a fourth AFCON title against the winners of the quarterfinal encounter between Algeria and Ivory Coast at the Cairo International Stadium.
