Player Of The Year Award: English Championship Defender Ends Real Madrid Superstar’s Reign

Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale’s four-year reign as the Welsh Player of the Year came to an end on Monday after Chris Gunter beat him to the award for this year.

Defender Chris Gunter of Reading from the English Championship was a former teammate of Bale at London club Tottenham Hotspur between 2008 and 2009.

Bale however took home the players’ player of the year award as consolation while Stoke midfielder Joe Allen won the fans’ player of the year.

Laura O’Sullivan won the women’s player of the year award, with Angharad James named the players’ player, and Jess Fishlock fans’ player of the year. Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn and Peyton Vincze were also named young players of the year.
