ICC U19 CWC: Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens Face Uphill Battle Against West Indies

The Junior Yellow Greens of Nigeria will take on the West Indies on Thursday in their second match at the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup ongoing in South Africa.

The15-man West Indies squad, led by team captain Kimani Melius includes three players who also participated in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Captain Melius is one of the three, alongside all-rounder Nyeem Young and bowler Ashmead Nedd. Young won the Player of the Match award in West Indies’ plate quarter-final victory over Ireland in the last edition.

Other names include Leonardo Julien and Jayden Searles, who are part of West Indies Emerging Players in the ongoing Super50 Cup, where they play alongside Melius and Nedd.

The West Indians have a five-man pace attack specially tailored for the prevailing conditions in South African and prepared for the global tournament by a hosting a tri-series against England and Sri Lanka.

West Indies also have batsmen that are comfortable on the back foot and are prepared to play with a positive intent; Mbeki Joseph was a late addition to the squad but fully deserved his call up with a string of big scores.

The 2016 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title winners got their campaign underway with two solid victories against three-time champions Australia and former tournament winners England beating the former by 3 wickets and the latter, by a whopping 71 runs to place a solid foot in the knock out round.

Nigeria fully rejuvenated following their tournament-opening loss to the Aussies will look to cause a major upset against this well-balanced Windies team.
