CAF CC: Ten Man Rangers Share Spoils With Salitas

Nigeria’s hope of making a mark on the continental stage might have been dealt another blow following Lobi Stars’ thrashing at Mamelodi Sundowns, as Enugu Rangers could not secure the crucial three points they need in other to have a fighting chance to qualify for the next round.

Ten-man Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by Salitas FC in Burkina Faso after a hard-fought encounter between both teams.

Reports indicate that Rangers saw less of the ball than their hosts but looked more versatile in attack, having more shots through the course of the first half with the Enugu club opening the scoring in the 33rd minute, as Ifeanyi  George got the better of goalkeeper Diakite Daouda to make it 1-0.

Rangers’ goal arrived despite being down to 10 men, with Semiu Liadi sent off for a second bookable offence inside the opening half hour.

Salitas needed just five minutes of the second half to hit back and level the game, with Ilasse Sawadogo netting to make it 1-1. That proved to be the last goal of the match, as the teams settled for a draw.

Meanwhile, CS Sfaxien tops Group B, having secured quarterfinal qualification with nine points, whereas Etoile du Sahel are second with seven points, and the bottom two places are taken up by Rangers who have five points and Salitas with four points.

The teams will wrap up their group stage campaigns next weekend, with Salitas away to Etoile du Sahel and Ranger at home to CS Sfaxien.
