CAFCC: Rivers Utd Crash Out In Heartbreaking Fashion

Rivers United suffered heartbreak in the Confederation Cup on Sunday as they crashed out in the play-off round to Egyptian side Al Masry on away goals after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

The Nigerians led 2-1 from the first leg in Aba but faced elimination after Mohamed Grendo scored in the 12th-minute to level the tie on aggregate and give the hosts the edge on away goals.

Despite having nearly eighty minutes to find the goal that would secure their place in the group stage, the Nigerians never got going as Al Masry held on for the win.

Defeat means Stanley Eguma’s side crash out at this stage for a second straight year, bringing an end to their continental hopes for this season.

Nigeria’s other Confederation Cup representatives, Enyimba took control of their play-off tie with a 2-0 first leg win against Libyan side Al Ittihad in Aba on Sunday.
