Aiteo Cup Quarterfinal Round-Up: Plateau United, Sunshine Stars Suffer Surprise Defeats

Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) top guns Plateau United and Sunshine Stars suffered surprising defeats in their first leg quarterfinal clash in the 2017 Aiteo Cup.

NPFL champions Plateau United were beaten 2-0 by fellow top flight team Niger Tornadoes at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja as their quest for a domestic double suffered a massive dent ahead of the second leg clash at home on Saturday. Bolaji Odeyemi and Ebenezer Odeyemi got the goals for the hosts.

 

Sunshine Stars also suffered a 1-0 away loss to less fancied Osun United in their first leg clash courtesy Tosin Omoyele’s 66th minute winner.

In the other quarterfinal clash played, holders FC IfeanyiUbah took a big step towards retaining the title they won last year with a 3-0 win over relegated NPFL side ABS FC of Ilorin in the first leg. The first leg of the 4th quarterfinal match between former champions Akwa United and Katsina United feeders will take place on Saturday.

In the women’s section, Aminat Yakubu scored the only goal of the game as Bayelsa Queens beat Nasarawa Amazon 1-0 at the Nembe City Stadium in their first leg clash. Abia Angels also defeated Confluence Queens at home by the same scoreline with Taiwo Akinyinka getting the goal.

The other first leg quarterfinal clashes saw Rivers United play out a goalless draw with Edo Queens at home while Ibom Angels got the better of visitors Pelican Stars by a lone goal courtesy Imaobong Emmanuel’s last gasp winner.
