Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, has described his long range strike against Spain at the 1998 World Cup in France as his “most memorable world cup moment”.

Despite Nigeria’s poor preparation and having lost all friendly games prior to the 1998 World Cup, Nigeria defeated Spain 3-2 in their opening match, courtesy of Sunday Oliseh’s ferocious strike to earn all three points for the Super Eagles.

Describing the moments that led to that iconic strike, Oliseh said: “Prior to this game, the preparations for us was very bad…I had a discussion with Bora Milutinovic in his room, I told him I don’t really feel very solid and he said, it is not important what the occasion is, but it’s important how you use the occasion,”

“The next training I noticed I was really full of strength, then my friend Taribo West said told me, Sunny you want to hit some ball? i will go into the goal, and I had to strike like 10 balls in a roll and nine went in,”

“The goal I scored was like one of those balls(in training), the ball was coming back and I just struck it and it was splendid, it was just like a folklore.”

Nigeria then went on to edge Bulgaria 1-0 before losing to Paraguay 1-3 to finish as Group D winners.
