2022 FIFA WCQ: Osimhen, Musa On Target As Eagles Dispatch Lone Star To Remain On Course For Qatar

Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa scored two penalties either side of half time as the Super Eagles dispatched Liberia 2-0 in Morocco to maintain their lead in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Osimhen scored from the spot in the 11th-minute to give Nigeria the lead after Kelechi Iheanacho was fouled in the box.

Substitute Musa on for a record 102nd international cap, marked the milestone by converting another spot kick in second half added time after the Liberia goalkeeper denied Osimhen a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The result, a mirror of the reverse fixture, keeps the Eagles on track to pick the sole ticket to the final qualifying round.

Nigeria lead the group with 12 points and were on track to seal qualification on Saturday but nearest rivals Cape Verde who were also in action at the same time were able to seal a come-from-behind win against the Central African Republic to keep things finely balanced in the group.

Isaac Ngoma had given the CAR a shock early lead, but hosts Cape Verde responded after the interval through Julio Taveres and Stopira to seal a win that keeps them within two points of Nigeria ahead of what promises to be an intriguing encounter between both sides next week.

The results mean Liberia and the CAR are out of the running in the group leaving Nigeria and Cape Verde to duke it out for the sole ticket in a potentially explosive encounter at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Tuesday.

A draw for Nigeria in Lagos will be enough for Gernot Rohr’s side to progress to the final, two-legged playoffs next March for a spot in Qatar.
