Yahoo Yahoo: IGP Wades Into Case of Enyimba Footballer Wrongly Accused Of Fraud By Policemen

The fallouts from the viral clip which surfaced online depicting men of the Nigeria Police Force harassing Enyimba player Stephen Chukwude continues as the Inspector General of Police Adamu Mohammed has waded into the matter and called for more “credible information to aid investigations and appropriate disciplinary measures”.

Chukwude, 24, recently suspended by the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions for “gross indiscipline” had been accosted by men who appeared to be members of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday and accused of being a “Yahoo Boy” – a term commonly used to describe internet fraudsters – on account that he was driving a Mercedez Benz and owned an iPhone.

The incident which was captured in a video live-streamed on the player’s Instagram page happened as the player journeyed from Akwa to Enugu and showed a policeman in the passenger seat of Chukwude’s car insisting that the player was a “Yahoo Boy” even after Chukwude has presented his identifying documents and had his car searched with nothing incriminating found.

“Is it everybody that has a Mercedes that is a Yahoo Boy?” Chukwude asked the officer who was oblivious to the fact that he was being filmed.

“Yes, it’s everybody,” the policeman replied.

After which he then attempted to grab the phone when he realised that he’d been caught on the tape.

Chukwude secretly filmed the harrowing encounter

That clip which has since gone viral has attracted widespread condemnation and the attention of the IGP.

“The attention of the @PoliceNG has been drawn to this clip on social media, the IGP implores anyone with credible information concerning this video to avail the Force to aid investigations and appropriate disciplinary measures.” the Nigeria Police Force said in a tweet released on its official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

The striker has also released a message of gratitude on social media to fans and wellwishers for their efforts in raising awareness about the incident.

The incident is just one in a multitude of near-daily and often harrowing complaints involving reckless and illegal behaviour by some members of the Nigeria Police Force and comes amid growing public concern of the increased criminality witnessed amongst the ranks of the Police.
