WRESTLING: Nigeria Excel At Commonwealth Championships In South Africa

Four Nigerian female wrestlers distinguished themselves at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Brakpan, South Africa following their scintillating performances.

In the 76kg weight class, Bayelsa-born Kemeasuodei Dressman won gold while multiple-African Champion Blessing Oborodudu claimed a silver medal in the 68kg category.

Fighting in the 72kg weight class, Gofit Winnie won a silver medal but was hospitalized after sustaining an injury in her final bout while Commonwealth Champion Aminat Adeniyi settled for a bronze medal.

With the results, Dressman, Oborodudu, Adeniyi and Gofit have secured qualification for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia.

Meanwhile, Soso Tamara in the men’s 96kg category failed in his attempt to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, losing his first two matches to South African and Indian opponents.

It could have been better for Team Nigeria at the Championships had they travelled with a full contingent. Seven wrestlers failed to make it to South Africa due to insufficient funds to purchase their flight tickets.
