Williams Sisters To Meet In US Open Third Open

The Williams sisters will face each other in the third round of the ongoing US Open tournament in New York following their respective second round victories.

The third round clash between the two sisters, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, at Flushing Meadows would be their 30th career meeting.

Serena Williams, 36, defeated world number 101 Carina Witthoft of Germany 6-2 6-2 in their second round clash in 67 minutes, while two-time champion Venus Williams beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-4 7-5 in one hour and 52 minutes.

Serena leads Venus 17-12 from their previous meetings, with the last Grand Slam duel coming in the 2017 Australian Open final.

Six-time US Open champion Serena won in Melbourne while she was eight weeks pregnant.

Ahead of their meeting, the 17th seed said: “We’d rather have met later.”

16th seed Venus added: “Obviously, it’s early in the tournament, so both of us are going to be looking forward to continuing to play better.”
